Jesus Blessing the Children

“And He took them up in His arms, and put His hands on their heads and blessed them.” (Mark 10:16)

The top symbol is the fish, possibly the best known of Christian symbols, other than the cross. The Greek word for fish is “Ichthus” — I (Greek word for Jesus); CH (Christ), TH (God), U (Son) and S (Savior). The fish was used as a sign by which early Christians identified themselves to one another in the days of the persecution. The circle of three fish came to mean that salvation came from God, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. It also recalls the sacrament of Holy Baptism (a fish must live in water) and is thus a symbol of Christian regeneration The lower flame, or seven flames, represents the Holy Spirit on the Day of Pentecost when “tongues of fire” rested upon the followers of Christ and they were “all filled with the Holy Spirit”. The seven gifts of the Holy Spirit, listed in Isaiah : wisdom, understanding , counsel, might, knowledge, fear of the Lord and godliness, and pictured variously in symbolism, are taken to symbolize the Holy Spirit itself.
